Free agent outlook: Paul Konerko

By Richard Durrett

As we head into the Winter Meetings, we'll take a look at some free agents on the market that might make some sense for the Rangers. One of those is Paul Konerko.

The Rangers still consider Vladimir Guerrero an option at the DH spot for next year, but they'll explore all options and see what deal makes sense. Adam Dunn is off the market now. But Konerko is still available.

He can play some first base (splitting time with Mitch Moreland) and DH for the club in 2011. Texas would have to give up its first-round draft pick (No. 26) to get Konerko, but if they lose Cliff Lee they'd pick up the Yankees' first-round pick.

Konerko finished fifth in the AL MVP voting, hitting .312 with 39 homers and 111 RBIs. He's a right-handed hitter, something that would be a nice addition to go along with the strong left-handed hitters on the Rangers' roster. Konerko turns 35 before next season and has played in at least 149 games in six of his last seven seasons. He's had at least 100 RBIs in four of those. Konerko, BTW, made $12 million last season.

Guerrero wants a multi-year deal and the Rangers must decide if they are willing to do that with Guerrero, depending on the overall salary, or if they want to get a one-year deal with someone else. We'll see what kind of bites Konerko gets at the Winter Meetings. Stay tuned.
