Notes: Lineup, Brandon Webb's progress
By Richard Durrett
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Rangers manager Ron Washington didn't want the media reading into today's intrasquad lineup too much, saying that he's trying to get guys some at-bats and that we'd all know more about his lineup intentions Sunday when the Rangers play the Royals in the first exhibition game of the spring.
Washington has Ian Kinsler in the leadoff spot with Elvis Andrus No. 2 in today's game. We'll see if that holds Sunday, but those are the two candidates for the leadoff job. Andrus was there for most of 2010, and Kinsler was in the No. 1 spot in 2009.
Washington said that Kinsler did a better job of taking what the pitcher gave him in 2010 and his numbers looked much more like a leadoff hitter in 2010 (when he wasn't leading off) than they did in 2009. Stay tuned.
* Washington was excited by what he saw from Brandon Webb's "heavy" long toss session on Thursday.
"Wow," Washington said. "The ball was coming out of his hand really good. The arm strength is picking up."
The manager was optimistic that Webb could throw off a mound soon. He's supposed to throw long toss again Friday and then take a light day before possibly climbing up on a mound Sunday.
* Adrian Beltre is not in the lineup today with the mild calf muscle strain, and Washington said he may not play Sunday, either. The club will take it slow and not take any chances.
* At this point, C.J. Wilson remains on the mound for the intrasquad game despite feeling ill.
