Mike Gonzalez amazed he's at World Series

By Richard Durrett

ST. LOUIS -- Mike Gonzalez was playing out the season for the Baltimore Orioles just two months ago. He was a solid left-handed reliever in the bullpen who could get left-handed batters out with regularity.

That skill drew the attention of the Rangers, who scouted Gonzalez in August and determined he was worth shipping Pedro Strop to Baltimore at the end of August to bolster the bullpen for the final month and the postseason.

"I'm excited," Gonzalez said. "Look what's happened in two months. I'm on the AL champions. This is definitely where you want to be. This is what you dream about. I've been mimicking the World Series since I was six years old."

Gonzalez, unlike many of the Rangers' pitchers, is pretty familiar with the Cardinals.

"I think it helps me that I was in the National League for six yeras," Gonzalez said. "I faced them a lot. I faced them in Atlanta and Pittsburgh. It's a good hitting team. I'll talk to the guys aobut it. But in never having faced them before, it's advantage pitcher. These guys know what to do."

Gonzalez believes the Rangers are the better of the two teams.

"They’re a good hitting team, but we’re a better hitting team, I think," Gonzalez said. "They’re a good pitching team, but we have better pitching. I’m sure they feel the same way. It’s going to be a good series. I’m excited about it."
