Game 1 rewind: Walking Nick Punto
By Richard Durrett
ST. LOUIS -- It wasn't some form of strategy from the bench for starter C.J. Wilson to pitch around Nick Punto in the sixth inning of Game 1.
"I wanted him to get him out," manager Ron Washington said. "He was making pitches and Punto didn't chase. I'd like to have seen him get him out."
Punto ended up walking and that forced Washington to go to Alexi Ogando with two outs to pitch to pinch-hitter Allen Craig, who ended up getting the go-ahead RBI single.
Washington was asked if Wilson challenges Punto, does the manager like his chances.
"Yeah," Washington said. "I got C.J. out there. We're talking about Nick Punto. He's not Stan Musial."
Punto was hitting .143 in the postseason going into Game 1. Washington did walk him intentionally earlier in the game to get to the pitcher's spot.
"I knew right there in that inning, it was going to be the pitcher hitting," Washington said.
