Notes: Big day ahead for Yu Darvish
By Richard Durrett
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- For the first time this spring, Yu Darvish is set to speak to the media this afternoon at Surprise Recreation Campus.
But before he does that, he'll participate in PFP (pitcher's fielding practice) with the rest of the pitchers and then throw a five-minute bullpen session followed by five minutes of live batting practice. It will be the first time he's thrown to hitters in camp and pitching coach Mike Maddux said all of the pitchers should be throwing around 80 percent. There were about 50 Japanese media on hand to watch Darvish throw off flat ground and more are expected today (and more are already here, judging by the crowded clubhouse this morning).
So we'll keep you updated here on the blog and on Twitter (@espn_durrett) as to how everything goes.
* Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is in camp, but won't speak to the media until Thursday morning. The first full squad workout is scheduled for Sunday.
* Catcher Yorvit Torrealba didn't answer any questions about his run-in with an umpire in Venezuela this winter, saying he's looking forward. He did talk about how excited he was to be in camp and to see how Darvish and the rest of the pitchers do. We'll have more on Torrealba later.
* BTW, Darvish will be working on PFP with this group of pitchers: Neftali Feliz, Derek Holland, Colby Lewis, Matt Harrison, Koji Uehara, Yoshi Tateyama and Alexi Ogando.
* Maddux said Wilmer Font is full go and will throw today. He also indicated that Mike Adams will throw a live BP session as well.
