Daily (Yu) Darvish: Off-field adjustments

By Master Tesfatsion

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux can't imagine what it's like to be pitcher Yu Darvish.

He's having to adjust to life in another country off the field. Asides from the obvious cultural differences, Maddux said it'll also affect things like his diet.

"I’ve played winter ball and you go down to a different culture and it takes a little getting used to," Maddux said.

Maddux won't lessen the load for Darvish, who said he had conditioning problems during Tuesday's outing. It's a game of adjustments and Maddux said Darvish will stick to the program.

However, he doesn't plan for Darvish to make adjustments on the mound after five innings.

"It's still too early to tell what we’re going to have to do, but as we start stretching it out and we see more of it, then we can see what adjustments we’re going to have to make," Maddux said.

"He’s got enough adjustments to make culturally and environmentally. He’s got a lot on his plate."

*Darvish worked on fielding ground balls, line drives and pop ups from the mound Thursday with a group of pitchers. He was given a situation and had to throw to either first or second base. Darvish was quick with his reactions after he fielded the ball during the drill.
