Yu Darvish alters leg kick, has success
By Richard Durrett
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Yu Darvish unveiled a slightly different delivery Saturday, going with a slight hesitation on his leg kick.
"That’s the way I threw before," Darvish said through interpreter Joe Furukawa. "My original delivery was kind of like that. So I just thought about going back to that and trying it out tonight.”
Darvish felt there were "inconsistencies" in his delivery the past few starts. They weren't there Saturday. Darvish had a quality start, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 6 1/3 innings. He had three walks and seven strikeouts. Darvish deserved a better fate, but his defense struggled behind him.
"That’s a part of the game," Darvish said. "At the end, I gave up that run. I couldn’t stop them from scoring, and I’m a little disappointed about that. But it’s all about the team."
Overall, Darvish was pleased with how he pitched and hopes to keep things going in Oakland.
"The last couple times I wasn’t able to throw the ball to my satisfaction, but tonight the ball felt good," Darvish said. "I was able to make good pitches. I felt good about tonight, but unfortunately the team lost. So I’m disappointed about that."
