It's time to see a bit of Jurickson Profar
By Richard Durrett
For those hoping the Texas Rangers' call-up of Jurickson Profar on Saturday signals that you'll see him take the field a bunch between now and the end of the season, I think you'll be a bit disappointed.
Profar's job, simply put, is to be the utility infielder. He'll get some chances to fill in for some regulars, but don't expect to see him in some kind of regular rotation with consistent playing time.
And that's OK.
"He's here because we felt he was the best candidate for the job right now," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "Obviously you don't typically consider a young guy for a utility role, and we wouldn't if this was April, but we're looking to put our best 25 there, and we felt he's one of them."
Just being around the big league environment in the middle of a pennant race will be good for Profar. It's a chance to gain experience and get a taste of what life is like in the majors. The Rangers envision Profar as a big part of their future and being involved in winning teams. So why not let him see what it's like now?
"The experience can only help him," Daniels said.
That's right. And it will be fun for fans, teammates and coaches to see what Profar's got in some limited action in the big leagues.
