By Robert Falkoff / Special to ESPNDallas.com
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Texas Rangers will take on the Kansas City Royals in the third game of a four-game series tonight at Kauffman Stadium. The game starts at 7:10 p.m. on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM and FSSW. Here’s a look at the pitching matchup featuring RHP Ryan Dempster vs. LHP Everett Teaford:
Rangers closer Joe Nathan talks about bouncing back after his injury, the spat with the Royals, the division race and more.
Dempster (4-1, 4.58 ERA with Rangers): Dempster will be facing some unfamiliar hitters as his indoctrination to the American League continues. Jeff Francoeur and Alcides Escobar had 15 and 13 at-bats, respectively, against Dempster during their time in the National League. No other current Royal who is active has more than three at-bats against the veteran right-hander. ... Dempster has had four quality starts in six outings for Texas. ... He allowed two hits and one run over six innings Friday against the Indians for his third straight win.
Teaford (1-3, 4.30 ERA): Teaford is making a spot start because the Royals got in a pitching bind last week when they played a Saturday doubleheader against Minnesota. He earned the start based on the second game of that doubleheader when he worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings in long relief. ... Teaford has faced the Rangers three times, with all of those outings coming in 2011. He didn’t allow a run over 1 2/3 combined innings. ... Teaford is making his eighth major league start. He’s 3-2 in starting assignments, posting a 4.95 ERA over 36 1/3 innings.
Hitters: Escobar went 2-for-13 against Dempster when Escobar was with the Brewers and Dempster was with the Cubs. Francoeur did well against Dempster in the NL, going 5-for-16 with three doubles and a homer. ... The only Rangers who have faced Teaford are Mitch Moreland and David Murphy. That duo is a combined 0-for-3 against the Royals lefty.
Up next: Thu. at KC: RHP Scott Feldman (6-11, 5.01 ERA) vs. RHP Luke Hochevar (7-13, 5.34 ERA), 7:10 p.m., ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM/1540 AM/FSSW
