Buzz: Other bullpen pieces come through

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Before Mark Lowe gave up the winning home run in the 10th inning of Tuesday's game, manager Ron Washington got some quality innings out of some key parts of his bullpen not named Joe Nathan or Mike Adams.

Washington said after the game that he was not going to use Adams, and he decided once the Rangers didn't take the lead in the eighth that he didn't want to use Nathan, either. Both are fine, but Washington wasn't going to throw Adams a third straight game after returning from a tight muscle in his shoulder, and Nathan has had a heavy workload lately.

Part of what made the Nathan decision easier was Alexi Ogando's willingness to pitch another inning.

"He was fired up," Washington said. "He wanted the ball. He understood we needed another inning."

Ogando ended up with two shutout innings on his ledger. It was Ogando's first two-inning outing since Aug. 8.

Ogando struck out three of the seven batters he faced. Michael Kirkman gave the club two shutout innings, as well, with four strikeouts and one walk. Washington said he didn't consider having Koji Uehara pitch more than one inning despite throwing 12 pitches.

Other notes:

* Tanner Scheppers, who pitched after Lowe gave up the home run and another hit, said he felt good in his first outing since getting a break bacause of a bruised knee. "I was happy to be out there," Scheppers said. "Everything felt great."

Scheppers said he watched a replay of the play at the plate, where he landed awkwardly and hurt his knee.

"It was a freak thing," Scheppers said.

* The Rangers announced minor league awards for August/September: RHP Angelo Leclerc was pitcher of the month, OF Leonys Martin was player of the month, OF Preston Beck was defender of the month and LHP Alexander Claudio was reliever of the month.
