Who wins the AL West today?
By Richard Durrett
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Since that's the big question of the day, we thought we'd ask you. The Texas Rangers and Oakland A's are tied for the AL West lead with one game remaining -- today at 2:37 p.m. Central Time.
So who wins the West?
It's really two colliding teams going in very different directions. The Rangers have lost four of their last five and eight of the last 12 games, allowing the A's to make up ground the last few weeks. In fact, Texas was up by four games heading into Friday's action and have given all of that away in the last five days.
The winner gets more than a division title. The victor today avoids the always-dangerous one-game, winner-take-all AL wild-card playoff and instead heads right to the ALDS. The fact that the A's even have this opportunity is an upset, but they have been playing tremendous baseball. They've won five straight and seven of the last eight to push their win total to 93 games.
A.J. Griffin goes for the A's against the Rangers' Ryan Dempster. And I think early runs will be key. The Rangers have to find a way to generate some offensive momentum and need to do it early to settle in and feel better about themselves.
So who wins today's game and why?
