No shock that Leury Garcia on 40-man
By Richard Durrett
It was not a surprise to see Leury Garcia go on the 40-man roster Tuesday so that he's protected from the Rule 5 draft. Unlike previous years, the Texas Rangers didn't really have too many difficult choices on the 40-man. An obvious decision was protecting Garcia so he couldn't be poached by another team.
Garcia, 21, hit .292 with 12 doubles, 11 triples, two homers, 30 RBIs and 31 stolen bases in 100 games with Double-A Frisco in 2012. He's a switch-hitter who played second base and shortstop last year. He was second in the Texas League in triples and fifth in stolen bases. Garcia had the fourth-highest batting average among Texas minor leaguers.
Garcia is currently playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic and is hitting .288 with four doubles, a triple, two homers and seven RBIs in 20 games for Cibao.
The club also added LHP Joe Ortiz to the 40-man. He finished the season in Triple-A Round Rock last year. The 22-year-old ended up 2-3 with six saves and a 2.15 ERA in 51 relief appearances with Frisco and Round Rock. He had 52 strikeouts and nine walks. Ortiz held lefties to a .216 average.
