No hitting coordinator position in 2013

By Richard Durrett

The Rangers have decided not to fill a hitting coordinator position in the minor league system this season.

"We thought in light of all the changes that we had both at the major league level and minor league level that we’d take a step back and look at things," said Tim Purpura, senior director of player development.

It’s expected to be a temporary move. But for 2013, field coordinator Jayce Tingler and special assistant roving hitting instructor Harry Spilman will handle those duties with guidance from Triple-A hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh and major league hitting coach Dave Magadan.

"Jayce and Harry worked together at Instructional League in a hitting program there and we were pleased with how it went," Purpura said. "They complemented each other well and we wondered if it was something we should look at this year."

Magadan is the fifth different hitting coach at the major league level since the 2009 season began.

"With the different hitting coaches the organization has had, you pick up some of what each of them do and put it in a hitting program and all of a sudden you’ve got a lot of philosophies going on," Purpura said. "We need to simplify it. It’s easier on the coaches and players that way. So we want to examine where we’re at and where we want to be and what our approach is going forward."
