Injuries: Joakim Soria throws off mound

By Richard Durrett

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Texas Rangers reliever Joakim Soria, a two-time All-Star closer with the Kansas City Royals, threw off a mound for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last April.

Soria, 28, made 15 pitches on Monday off a mound in Surprise and felt fine. Assuming he arrives at the park on Tuesday feeling fine, he’ll throw every other day for the next 15 days.

Soria signed a two-year, $8 million contract in December with a club option for a third year. There is no set timetable for Soria’s return, but he and the club have targeted late May or early June. If Soria can return healthy, he’s a logical choice to set up closer Joe Nathan.

Soria gives the Rangers bullpen a veteran with closing experience. Soria has 160 career saves.
