Dose of Darvish: Inside the numbers
By Todd Wills
Yu Darvish has taken us to a place this season where it's impossible not to get caught up in the numbers.
Fortunately for stat heads, the fine folks at ESPN Stats & Information and their friends at Elias have come up with gobs of information on Darvish's seven starts.
In making a case for Darvish as the early favorite for the American Cy Young along with Detroit's Justin Verlander and Boston's Clay Buchholz, Darvish appears to have the edge.
He has two 14-strikeout games this season. The only other Rangers pitcher to have multiple games with 14 strikeouts or more is Nolan Ryan. He did it seven times.
Darvish, with 72 Ks, has struck out 40.5 percent of the batters he's faced. How good is that? The league average for qualified starts is 19.6 percent, and Darvish's next closest pursuer is Detroit's Max Scherzer at 35.1 percent.
Darvish has 12 career 10-strikeout games in 36 major league stats. According to Elias, the most 10-plus strikeout games in the first 36 starts since 1900 are: Dwight Gooden (16), Darvish (12), Hideo Nomo (12), Herb Score (10), Mark Prior (10).
That puts Darvish in pretty high company as he prepares for his next start Saturday at Houston.
