Minors: Rangers announce April honors

The Rangers announced their minor league award winners for April.

Triple-A outfielder Joey Butler, 27, was named player of the month after batting .341 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 25 games. Butler hit safely in 20 of 25 games. He had hit in five straight games prior to being placed on the disabled list on May 1.

Right-hander C.J. Edwards in the pitcher of the month after going 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA for Low-A Hickory in the South Atlantic League. Edwards is third in the league with 29 strikeouts. Edwards was picked in the 48th round of the 2011 June draft out of Mid-Carolina (S.C.) High School.

Double-A Frisco Catcher Tomas Telis was named defender of the month, and RoughRiders right-hander Randy Henry was named reliever of the month. Tellis, 21, has thrown out 55.6 percent of would-be base stealers. Henry, 22, allowed one unearned run over 18 1/3 innings for a red hot Frisco bullpen.

Lewis begins rehab: Right-hander Colby Lewis will begin his rehab assignment for Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday night in Las Vegas at 9:05 p.m.

Japanese OF promoted: Outfielder Hirotoshi Onaka was promoted to Triple-A Round Rock from extended spring training. The switch-hitter hasn't played above Class in two years in the Rangers system. He has a career .263 batting average in the minors with one home run and 16 RBIs in 81 games.
