New catcher's arrival up to game-time drive
By Todd Wills
HOUSTON -- New Rangers backup catcher Robinson Chirinos' biggest task Friday was getting to Minute Maid Park.
Chirinos, called up Friday with starter A.J. Pierzynski going on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle, had two flights cancelled coming from Las Vegas' McCarran Airport, where Triple-A Round Rock was playing, to Houston.
Chirinos finally was able to fly into D/FW Airport early Friday afternoon, where he jumped in a car and made the 300-mile trip on Interstate 45. The Rangers were hopeful he would arrive by game time and Chirinos did, getting to the ballpark at 6:15 p.m.
That made for some great driving. With the traffic in Houston at rush hour on a Friday afternoon, it could be more like the fourth or fifth inning.
