Matchup: Nick Tepesch vs. Adam Wainwright
By Todd Wills
The Rangers go for a sweep in St. Louis when rookie Nick Tepesch faces Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright at 7:05 p.m. Sunday night on ESPN and ESPN-FM 103.3 and 1540-AM.
Tepesch (3-6, 4.84): Tepesch is trying to snap out of a slide that's seen him go winless in his last six starts ... Tepesch is 0-2 with a 9.77 ERA for his last three starts ... He allowed six runs in 3 2/3 innings against Oakland on Monday ... Tepesch had three scoreless innings and a 3-0 lead but gave up six runs in the fourth inning ... Tepesch's story can be told by trips through opposing lineups ... Opponents are batting .168 against the first time through ... That goes up to .260 the second time and .397 the fourth time ... Tepesch has struggled to get to a third trip through a lineup of late ... He worked on command of all of his pitches in his last bullpen session as he gave up key hits on his fastball, slider and curve ball.
Wainwright (10-4, 2.37): Wainwright was the first pitcher in the majors to get to 10 wins ... He actually lost his most recent start, falling the Cardinals' arch rivals, the Chicago Cubs, on Tuesday ... Wainwright allowed four runs in seven innings ... Wainwright had won six straight starts, going at least seven innings in each one of them ... Wainwright is 7-4 with a 3.20 ERA in interleague starts.
Up next: The Rangers have an off day on Monday before beginning a three-game series in the Bronx against the New York Yankees.
