Matchup: Ross Wolf vs. Miguel Gonzalez
By Jeff Seidel Special to ESPNDallas.com
BALTIMORE -- Ross Wolf is a late fill-in for Yu Darvish as the starting pitcher and will go against Miguel Gonzalez in the finale of this four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. The game begins at 6:05 p.m. on FSSW and ESPN Dallas 103.3
Rangers GM Jon Daniels dishes on Yu Darvish's injury, whether he is concerned about a potential suspension of Nelson Cruz, his expectations for Manny Ramirez and more.
Wolf (1-1, 1.95): Darvish was supposed to start this game, but the Rangers put the All-Star on the 15-day disabled list, so Wolf gets the call. ... He has been working as the Texas long man recently, appearing in relief in 11 of his 12 appearances. ... Wolf took the loss in the 18-inning marathon against the Toronto Blue Jays last month despite giving up one run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief. ... The 30-year old right-hander said after Wednesday's loss that he could give the Rangers 75-80 pitches Thursday.
Gonzalez (6-3, 3.63): He has been a solid starter for the Orioles since they acquired him in 2012. ... Gonzalez has won four of his past five decisions this season and been one of Baltimore's most consistent starters. ... Manager Buck Showalter and the Orioles feel that Gonzalez seems to do better when getting an extra day of rest, and they try to give him that when possible, which is what happened in this case. He last pitched on July 5 and gets five days off instead of four. ... The right-hander has good control and command. He has struck out 72 and walked only 32 this season.
Hitters: Only a few Texas batters have ever gone against Gonzalez. Nelson Cruz and Ian Kinsler each have one hit against him. Wolf has faced only three Orioles, and none has a hit against him.
