Numbers: Wasted chances for Rangers
By Richard Durrett
The Rangers lost 1-0 on Saturday, but it wasn't because they didn't have some chances offensively. They just could not get the big hit, something that has plagued this team during its September swoon. A look at the chances on Saturday (thanks to ESPN Stats & Information):
Jim Bowden joins Fitzsimmons and Durrett and attempts to solve the Rangers' problems.
* The Rangers had a baserunner in eight of their nine innings
* They had seven plate appearances with runners on base and fewer than two outs -- they were 0-for-7 and only one of those seven plate appearances was a productive out
* They got the leadoff batter on twice and couldn't advance him past first base in either instance
* Their best chance came in the bottom of the fourth, when A.J. Pierzynski singled with two outs and then Geovany Soto doubled to left field. ... This is something Texas has struggled with all season -- the have scored from first base on a double only 35.4% of the time this season, 25th in the majors.
