SAN DIEGO – Yu Darvish threw a season-high 122 pitches in eight innings in the Texas Rangers’ 4-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park.

The Rangers completed the sweep to improve to 12-3 in interleague play and extend their winning streak to six games.

Darvish’s previous high for pitches was 121 on April 19 against the Detroit Tigers. He allowed two runs and five hits, struck out eight and walked three Wednesday in joining rotation-mate Matt Harrison as a nine-game winner.

Some thoughts on the Rangers' second consecutive series sweep:

Gaining control: Darvish’s command was a topic of interest after he issued just two walks, tying a season low, in his last start. He issued two walks in the first inning but only one more the rest of the way.

Hurt by the other pitcher: The Padres jumped ahead 2-0 on starting pitcher Anthony Bass' two-run single off Darvish in the second inning. Bass then stole second for his first career stolen base.

Darvish got a little payback by recording his first major league hit in the third inning, singling off Bass. Darvish then got doubled off first base when Ian Kinsler lined out.

Hamilton report: In his second start since recovering from an intestinal virus, Josh Hamilton lined out to third base in his two at-bats against Bass. Hamilton doubled in the sixth against Dale Thayer. He also struck out against Brad Boxberger.

Short outing: Bass held the Rangers to a run in five innings, but exited with right shoulder inflammation after throwing 60 pitches.

Thayer replaced Bass and didn’t fare so well. He allowed a single to Michael Young and a double to Hamilton with one out in the sixth.

After an intentional walk to Adrian Beltre, the Rangers tied the score 2-2 when Nelson Cruz beat out a double play. The Rangers took the lead when Yorvit Torrealba drew a bases-loaded walk against Boxberger.

On the move: Kinsler stole two bases in the seventh inning after drawing a walk. He scored on Young’s sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead. Kinsler has 13 stolen bases.

Moving on up: Young’s sacrifice fly in the seventh made him the Rangers’ all-time leader with 67.

The crowd: Attendance was 23,942 for the afternoon game.
