KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- No, Ian Kinsler was not trying to let Chipper Jones get a hit in his final All-Star Game.

"I wish I could have [made a better play on the ball]," Kinsler said. "Both my hamstrings felt like they were going to explode and that I had lead in my feet. It worked out that it was Chipper Jones hitting it. Said and done it was pretty cool, but I would never just let a guy have a hit.

"It's cool that it worked out that way, no doubt, but there's not a lot of room to run underneath the dugout there, so I wasn't the freshest," Kinsler said.

Greg Maddux salutes Chipper Jones

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Future Hall of Famer and current Texas Rangers consultant Greg Maddux said Thursday that he was proud to be teammates with Chipper Jones, who announced today that the 2012 season will be his last. He's played his entire 18-year career in Atlanta.

The 40-year-old Jones won a World Series in 1995 with Maddux leading the rotation.

"I remember my first World Series and he caught the last out in Game 1, a popup in foul territory," Maddux said.

Maddux joked that Jones could always change his mind, but noted how difficult it is for one player to spend an entire career with the same organization.

"I think it's awesome," Maddux said. "He's had a great career. He's a winner. He played to win every day. He was a great hitter and was very well prepared. He meant a lot to that franchise and still means a lot to that franchise."

Maddux, who won three of his four Cy Young Awards in Atlanta, remembers playing all kinds of card games with Jones.

"I won most of them because he was a rookie," Maddux said, smiling. "But he's pretty good at them now. We played in the clubhouse before games, during rain delays, on the plane. He was fun to be around and a great teammate."
