Texas Rangers: Gavin Newsom
October, 27, 2010
With the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants set to open the World Series tonight at AT&T Park, there are a few traditional wagers being made between representatives of both cities:
Mayors: San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom will wear a Rangers' jersey while performing community service with children in Arlington if the Rangers win. Also on the line: Ghiradelli chocolate and sourdough bread. If the Rangers lose, Arlington mayor Robert Cluck will do the same, while bringing along some Texas-style barbecue with all the fixins.
Governors (well ... maybe): Texas Governor Rick Perry has put up a pair of cowboy boots, but his opposition isn't California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Actually, it's Republican nominee Meg Whitman, who is staking a surfboard from South Coast Surf Shops that the Giants will win.
Track presidents: Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage is wagering 49 pounds of smoked Texas turkey – one pound for every year of the Rangers' World Series drought -- that the Rangers will win. Meanwhile, Infineon Raceway president Steve Page has promised a gourmet wine and cheese reception for next week's AAA Texas 500 if the Giants lose.
