TCU position battles settled in new depth chart

Less than 48 hours before its season opener at Minnesota, TCU finally released its depth chart for week one late Tuesday night.

That updated two-deep settles a few important disputes the Horned Frogs were figuring out throughout the offseason. The key decisions:

  • True freshman Mike Freeze will start at middle linebacker, as expected, while junior Sammy Douglas beat out freshman Montrel Wilson for the strongside linebacker job.

  • The No. 2 cornerback job went to sophomore Nick Orr. Senior Corry O'Meally and freshman Julius Lewis are the second-string corners.

  • Trevone Boykin's top backup will be Bram Kohlhausen. The senior edged out redshirt freshman Foster Sawyer for those duties.

  • Receiver Deante Gray, who was considered "doubtful" to play against Minnesota due to a spring knee injury, isn't listed on the two-deep. Sophomore speedster Desmon White is slated to start in his place.

  • True freshman KaVontae Turpin is going to handle TCU's punt return duties. He's one of nine true freshmen who made it onto the depth chart this week.

And there's one more surprise coming from the Horned Frogs. Gary Patterson told reporters TCU will be missing two defensive players for the Thursday night opener. But he did not say who.

“You’ll find out when we get to game time,” Patterson said.
