Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to debut Saturday
For Owusu-Ansah it's been a long journey. He missed the organized team activities, rookie and veteran minicamps while recovering from a separated shoulder. A hamstring injury slowed his progress, but he was finally cleared to practice when the Cowboys were in their last week of training camp in San Antonio.
Owusu-Ansah hasn't been on the field in a game. He has excellent speed and the coaches praised his ability to grasp the defensive scheme.
There are times when Owusu-Ansah is right on top of a play in practice and he's shown an ability to get physical, but sometimes he's nowhere near a play. Secondary coach Dave Campo got on Owusu-Ansah for not mixing it up near the goal line.
On kick returns, you can tell Owusu-Ansah uses his speed well to get through seams and he's got a little wiggle, something you need when returning kicks.
The problem for Owusu-Ansah is you don't know what he can do.
Saturday the coaches get to find out.
"He'll get enough snaps where we'll evaluate him," safety coach Brett Maxie said. "He knows what to do mentally. He's had to get used to the speed of the game."
