Cowboys keeping only three corners

It appears that the Cowboys will keep only three true cornerbacks after cutting Cletis Gordon and Bryan McCann.

This is an option because of the position flexibility of fourth-round pick Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and veteran Alan Ball, two of the six safeties who will make the 53-man roster.

Owusu-Ansah played cornerback and safety in college. He's played primarily safety for the Cowboys, but he's worked in the slot in their nickel and dime packages, so he can serve as a fourth corner on game days.

Ball is the starting free safety, but he came into the league as a cornerback before making the transition last season. The Cowboys would prefer for him to focus on free safety, but he can still play cornerback in a pinch.

Gordon seemed to seize the fourth cornerback role during training camp, when he had a double-figure interception total. However, he had a poor performance in the preseason finale, which might have cost him his job.

McCann also struggled in the preseason finale, perhaps making it more likely that he'll clear waivers and end up on the Cowboys' practice squad. The Cowboys might also stash sixth-round pick Jamar Wall, who was behind Gordon and McCann on the depth chart, on the practice squad.
