DALLAS -- Rick Carlisle and Josh Howard didn't always see eye-to-eye, but it pained the Mavs' coach to hear about Howard's season-ending knee injury.

Howard suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during the Washington Wizards' win Monday night over the Chicago Bulls. It was Howard's fourth game after the Mavs traded him to Washington.

"That’s terrible," Carlisle said. "Circumstances that happen in this sport and just the timing of things is crazy. I’m very disappointed obviously for him. He’s not deserving of that kind of luck at this point."

Howard battled injuries throughout Carlisle's tenure with the Mavs, missing dozens of games due to wrist and ankle problems that required offseason surgery.

Now Howard will enter the free agent market coming off another serious injury.

"It's unfortunate for Josh," Jason Kidd said. "He was playing well for them and it's a contract year. It's unfortunate. I just hope he has a speedy recovery."
