FORT WORTH, Texas -- Justin Wilson may have gotten the win in the IZOD IndyCar Series Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday night, but it wasn't without a little help.
Will Power, driver of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, had a lead late in the 228 race, but a pivotal drive-through penalty cost him the race after he illegally blocked Tony Kanaan.
"The penalty was unfortunate," Power said. "It definitely cost us the race, but I had a lot of fun. It was really about driving. The formula they came up with this year I think is great. It's the kind of racing that we need here."
Power took the lead in Lap 171, but it didn't last long. Kanaan, driver of the Mouser Electronics/GEICO KVRT Chevrolet, attempted to get around on the low side, but Power moved down to block him, making contact. Kanaan's front wing was broken on the exchange, pushing him back in the field.
"You know, we talk about safety man. I mean this is not cool," Kanaan said. "I talked to him. Obviously, we've been in huge races. We talk about safety all the time. He's leading the championship. ... That move right there, to me, is unacceptable. ... So, I had a busy day, a busy night."
A few laps later, IndyCar Series officials handed down the drive-through penalty to Power to end any hopes at the checkered flag.
"It's what they call blocking," Power said of the incident. "Apparently, you're allowed to block this year, but they call that. It's somewhat confusing to fans. I think they were wondering what happened there, but that's what they call blocking.
"I ruined T.K.'s (Kanaan's) day, and I felt bad about that. We both ended up having a bad day."
Power entered pit road on Lap 194 to serve his penalty. He ended the race in eighth place.
