*Tickets for the Dallas Stars intrasquad game in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island went on sale today. The Stars are holding training camp in Prince Edward Island again. That was revealed back in March, but Stars assistant Frank Provenzano was in Charlottetown today for a formal announcement. The Guardian has a story here.
*PEI native Brad Richards was the big attraction at last year’s training camp in Charlottetown. Whether Richards, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, will be a Dallas Star next season is up in the air. The latest issue of The Hockey News takes a look at NHL free agency. Here is one agent’s take on the value Richards: “The guy had a great season, save for his injury,” the agent told THN. “I think he warrants a seven- to eight-year deal for $45-50 million. He’s in play for that.”
*THN also released its franchise rankings for 2011 in the latest issue. The Stars finished 20th out of the 30 NHL teams. The Stars received low grades for ownership and front office continuity and a less than average grade for the quality of their prospects over a span that ran from 2006-07 to now. Other factors measured included performances in the regular season and playoffs, draft success, franchise value, attendance and the 2010-11 standings. The top five teams in the rankings were Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, San Jose and Anaheim. The New York Islanders were the lowest ranked team, followed by Atlanta, Florida, St. Louis and Columbus.
*Saint John defeated Mississauga 3-1 yesterday to win the Memorial Cup. Stars prospect Matt Fraser, whose Kootenay Ice lost in the semifinal game, ended up tied for the tournament lead in goals with four and was tied for second in points with six. The Memorial Cup stats are here.
