Stars top Habs in preseason opener

The Dallas Stars opened the preseason with a 6-3 win at Montreal Tuesday night. The line of Brenden Morrow, Mike Ribeiro and Michael Ryder had a strong game with each player picking up a goal. Ribeiro and Ryder each picked up an assist as well.

“Me and Ribeiro have been together in preseason pretty much the whole time. It was the first game we played with Morrow and we clicked well,” said Ryder. “We had a lot of chances. It’s a good step for us and hopefully we can get better every game.”

Ryder, who won a Stanley Cup with Boston last season, was one of the Stars’ key free agent acquisitions this past summer.

“He’s come in and worked real hard,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan told reporters after the game. “He’s a great guy. I liked the way he played.”

Krys Barch, Adam Pardy and Matt Fraser also scored for the Stars, who built a 3-0 lead in the first period, watched Montreal cut it to 4-3 and then extended the lead with a power play goal by Ribeiro late in the second and put it away with a goal by Fraser late in the third.

Andrew Raycroft got the start in goal, and stopped 8 of 11 shots in 30:10 of playing time. Tyler Beskorowany played 29:46 and stopped all eight shots he faced.

Morrow left the game with what was called a minor tweak to his knee. The Stars said he was fine and was kept out of the rest of the game as a precaution.

Tuesday’s boxscore is here.
