Stars end road trip with 6-3 loss to Devils

The Dallas Stars ended their five-game road trip with a loss, falling 6-3 to the New Jersey Devils on Friday night. The Stars went 3-2-0 on the trip, their longest of the season. Michael Ryder, Brenden Morrow and Toby Petersen scored for the Stars, who had a three-game winning streak come to an end. Richard Bachman stopped 25 of 31 shots and suffered his first NHL loss.

First period

The Stars opened the scoring at 8:40 of the first when Ryder scored off a rebound of a Loui Eriksson shot.

New Jersey drew even when David Clarkson beat Stars goalie Bachman from a sharp angle at the 15:43 mark.

Stars defenseman Philip Larsen left the game with a lower body injury and did not return.

The Devils outshot the Stars 11-5 in the first period. New Jersey was 0-2 on the power play, and the Stars were 0-1 with the man advantage.

Second period

The Stars took a 2-1 lead 1:38 into the second when Mike Ribeiro sent a cross-ice pass to Brenden Morrow, who ripped the puck into the open side of the net.

The Stars had a chance to extend the lead with their second power play of the game 90 seconds later, but Zach Parise stripped Stephane Robidas of the puck and set up Adam Henrique, who scored short-handed to tie the game 2-all at the 3:35 mark.

The Stars almost got the goal back moments later, but Devils goalie Johan Hedberg made a pad save on Alex Goligoski, and then Devils defenseman Bryce Salvador swatted away Jamie Benn’s rebound attempt that was heading into an open net.

The Devils went up 3-2 at the 12:12 mark. After the Stars turned the puck over in their own end, Ilya Kovalchuk’s shot off the rush from the left circle beat Bachman to the glove side.

New Jersey extended the lead to 4-2 with 1:27 remaining in the period. After Stars center Vernon Fiddler turned over the puck at the New Jersey blue line, the Devils headed the other way and Petr Sykora scored off a rebound.

Third period

The Devils extended their lead to 5-2 at 9:19 of the third when defenseman Adam Larsson set up Parise, who put the puck into the open side of the net from close range.

The Stars made it a 5-3 game when Toby Petersen deflected a Sheldon Souray point shot into the net at the 14:10 mark.

But 20 seconds later, the Devils scored to make it 6-3 when a Dainius Zubrus shot bounced off teammate Patrik Elias and into the net.
