Texas Stars sign Austin Smith to amateur contract

March, 20, 2012
The Texas Stars have signed Dallas Stars prospect Austin Smith to an amateur tryout contract. Smith will join Texas for the rest of the American Hockey League season.

Smith said on his Twitter account today he has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars. That contract will kick in next season.

Smith, a Dallas native, was the Stars' fifth round pick in 2007. He just wrapped up his collegiate career at Colgate University, where he led the nation in goal scoring this season (36 goals in 39 games) and is one of ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, which goes to the top player in college hockey.
