Manager Ron Washington said Garko, acquired Thursday on a waiver claim from Seattle, would be the backup first baseman and emergency starters. Washington said he couldn't estimate on how many starts Garko would make at first base until he gave Davis a chance to show he could hit lefties.
"He’s going to get his chance against lefties out of the chute," Washington said. "We’ll see how it goes."
Garko gives the Rangers a nice platoon option if necessary. He's hit .311 with 15 homers and 61 RBI in 383 at-bats against southpaws the last three seasons.
Davis' career numbers against lefties: .226 with nine homers and 32 RBI in 208 at-bats.
But Davis is excellent defensive player with immense power. The Rangers hope he develops into a reliable everyday player. They'd prefer Garko, an adequate defender, to give Davis occasional rest against lefties.
"He’s our stud," Washington said of Davis.
