Do you have interest in Brad Hawpe?
Hawpe is 31 and from Fort Worth. He hit .255 this season with just seven homers and 37 RBI. Nothing really clicked for Hawpe on a consistent basis in 2010 and he battled injuries -- he hurt his leg and his ribs and was on the DL.
Why signing Hawpe could work: He had some great years with Rangers hitting coach Clint Hurdle, who knows him well. Could Hurdle help re-kindle Hawpe and put him in position to give the Rangers some more offense down the stretch? Maybe so.
Hawpe played right field and first base in 2010, so there is some versatility there. And he has a pedigree. Hawpe is a career .280 hitter and has averaged 23 homers and 92 RBI per season in his seven years, all with Colorado.
Why it might not make sense: Hawpe is a left-handed hitter at outfield and first baseman and this team has plenty of left-handed hitters at those positions (Josh Hamilton, Julio Borbon, Mitch Moreland and David Murphy).
Also, the club is getting Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz back soon, which will bolster the lineup. Not to mention that Vladimir Guerrero is swinging the bat better, meaning he's secure as the DH. So there may not be much room to get Hawpe at-bats.
Hawpe certainly has a proven track record that would make him a nice, veteran option to have off the bench. One option is that the Rangers could sign Hawpe and see how he plays in September. Yes, postseason rosters are set on Aug. 31. But as we'll discuss tomorrow morning when we look at the rules for that, anyone on the 25-man roster and on the disabled list on Aug. 31 is part of the pool of players that can be chosen. And teams can replace those on the DL with anyone currently in the organization. So anyone on the 60-day DL, for instance, could be replaced. That means Hawpe could get a look, play some in September and then just before the postseason, the Rangers could determine whether he belongs on the postseason roster.
Since he's a free agent with just a little over a month left in the season, he wouldn't cost much. It's just a question of whether it makes sense and with so many left-handed hitters, I'd say no.
Are you interested in Hawpe? Or should the Rangers just stick with what they have?
