Former bantamweight and junior featherweight champion Rafael Marquez will get back to business on May 5 in Tijuana, Mexico on a card headlined by popular women's junior featherweight champion Jackie Nava.
Nava will defend her title against Diana Ayala of Colombia, and Marquez (40-7, 36 KOs) will return on the undercard in a junior featherweight fight against Kenichi Yamaguchi (17-2-2, 4 KOs) of Japan.
In Yamaguchi's most recent fight, in July, he showed tremendous heart before eventually falling in a lopsided 11th-round knockout loss to featherweight titleholder Orlando Salido in Mexico.
Marquez, 37, is best known for going 2-2 in his epic four-fight series with Israel Vazquez. But Rafael, the younger brother of Juan Manuel Marquez, was also stopped in the eighth round of a featherweight title bout by Juan Manuel Lopez in November 2010 and is coming off a competitive decision loss to Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan in a junior featherweight title bout in October in Las Vegas. A win against Yamaguchi would probably push Marquez closer to another junior featherweight title opportunity.
