A few notes from around the boxing world:

  • Rising Puerto Rican lightweight star Felix Verdejo, the 2014 ESPN.com prospect of the year, will face Daniel Evangelista on April 16 (UniMas) in San Juan in the main event of “Solo Boxeo Tecate,” Top Rank matchmaker Brad “Abdul” Goodman told ESPN.com. If all goes well for the 22-year-old Verdejo (20-0, 14 KOs) against Evangelista (18-6-2, 14 KOs), 25, of Mexico, he is penciled to next fight on June 11 -- the eve of the annual Puerto Rican Day parade in New York -- in an HBO-televised co-feature at the Theater at Madison Square Garden. The leading candidate for that bout, according to Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, is Mexico’s Jose Felix Jr. (33-1-1, 25 KOs). Evangelista is 1-3-1 in his past four fights but has experience against opponents such as former junior lightweight titleholder Argenis Mendez and unbeaten prospect Casey Ramos.

  • The fight between heavyweight titleholder Deontay Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) and mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs) is slated for May 21 in Moscow, Russia, and promoter Andrey Ryabinsky of World of Boxing has added the cruiserweight title unification bout between Denis Lebedev (28-2, 21 KOs), of Russia, and Argentina’s Victor Emilio Ramirez (22-2-1, 17 KOs) to the undercard. Lebedev-Ramirez was initially penciled in for April 30 in Moscow. According to Showtime, the network is working on making a deal with Ryabinsky to televise the card in the United States.

  • Mexico’s Moises Flores (24-0, 17 KOs) is headed for a long road trip for the second defense of his interim junior featherweight belt. He will travel to Windhoek, Namibia, an African country, to take on hometown favorite Paulus Ambunda (24-1, 10 KOs) on May 7. Ambunda has won four fights in a row since losing his bantamweight world title to Tomoki Kameda in August 2013 and then moving up in weight.
