Famed German trainer Ulli Wegner is 71, but plans to stick around the gym and ringside for a while longer.
Wegner, who has been training pros since moving from amateur coaching in 1996, signed a contract extension with Sauerland Event on Tuesday, which will keep him working with many of the promoter's fighters until early 2016.
"I want to provide clarity, especially to my prodigies," Wegner said. "I want to point the way that I am far from done working as a cornerman. I have still a lot to give and will lead them to success."
He has trained numerous top fighters who have boxed for Sauerland Event. Wegner presently trains cruiserweight titleholders Marco Huck and Yoan Pablo Hernandez, former super middleweight and middleweight titlist Arthur Abraham, female welterweight star Cecilia Braekhus, former light heavyweight title challenger Karo Murat and former European light heavyweight titleholder Eduard Gutknecht.
Wegner also previously trained former super middleweight titleholders Sven Ottke and Markus Beyer, both of whom are retired, among others.
"Ulli Wegner not only is a cornerstone of our promotion, but a shining light of the whole German boxing scene," promoter Kalle Sauerland said. "I cannot imagine our team without him. We are all happy that he extended his contract."
