After former three-division titlist Abner Mares suffered a rib injury in training for his rematch with featherweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez, the fight -- scheduled to headline a Showtime card on Feb. 15 at Staples Center in Los Angeles -- was postponed on Dec. 30.
While Showtime and promoter Golden Boy plan to reschedule the card when Mares is cleared to resume training, the fighters made statements about the situation on Tuesday.
“I'd like to apologize to all of my fans, Golden Boy Promotions and Jhonny Gonzalez,” Mares said. “I was looking forward to getting back into the ring with Jhonny to avenge my loss, and once I recover from this injury, I'll be back in the gym and ready for this rematch as soon as possible.”
Said Gonzalez: “I'm disappointed of course, but I know that these things happen in boxing, and I wish Abner a speedy recovery. We both know that we'll meet again and when we do, we'll give the fans a fight to remember.”
Mares (26-1-1, 14 KOs), a former bantamweight and junior featherweight titlist, made his first featherweight title defense against Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KOs) on Aug. 24 and was stunningly knocked out in the first round in one of the biggest upsets of 2013.
Mares had a rematch clause in his contract and immediately exercised his option for another fight with Gonzalez.
