Quillin moves camp to N.Y. for good reason

When middleweight titlist “Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin was getting ready for his Oct. 26 defense against Gabriel Rosado, he did what he usually does: relocated to Los Angeles to work with trainer Eric Brown for an eighth consecutive fight.

When Quillin left for camp, his wife, Allison, was pregnant with their first child but suffered a miscarriage five months into the pregnancy. Quillin was 3,000 miles away while his wife went through it. Quillin, with a heavy heart, eventually fought Rosado, cut him badly and stopped him in the 10th round.

Quillin (30-0, 22 KOs) is now training for his third title defense, which will come against Lukas Konecny (50-4, 23 KOs) on April 19 (Showtime) on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins-Beibut Shumenov light heavyweight unification fight at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C. But Allison is pregnant again, and this time Quillin decided to stay home and train in Brooklyn, N.Y.

"Marriage has given me structure,” said Quillin, who got married in June. “I'm fighting for my family, so my kids are much better off than I was growing up. Last fight, I was obligated to camp and she had to go through it all without me being there with her. I struggled with it and have worked on being more compassionate. I decided to train at home for this fight so I can be close to her. We're living separately, though, because she understands the importance of this fight. She's giving me space to focus on training."

For the camp, Brown, who lives in Los Angeles, came to New York to train Quillin.

"I'm very comfortable training at home," Quillin said. "I'm with my people, and I'm there for my wife. I'm motivated to turn in my best performance April 19."
