Andrade to headline stand-in show
By Dan Rafael
Plans had been in the works for Golden Boy's May 4 card at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas -- which will piggyback off the big Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Miguel Cotto pay-per-view the next night at the MGM Grand -- to feature former junior featherweight titlist Daniel Ponce De Leon as the headliner on "Friday Night Fights" on ESPN2/ESPN3.
But when Golden Boy pulled the card from the network after reaching its recently announced TV deal with Fox Sports Media Group, there was no time for ESPN to put together a new card on such short notice.
So in order for ESPN to still air live boxing next week, the network has picked up the rights to a card that was already on the schedule and will run a one-hour "ESPN Boxing Special" on May 5 beginning at 10 p.m. ET from the Mohegan Sun resort in Uncasville, Conn.
The main event will feature 2008 U.S. Olympian and top junior middleweight prospect Demetrius Andrade (16-0, 11 KOs) -- who has been a regular on "Friday Night Fights" since turning pro after the Olympics -- squaring off against Rudy Cisneros (12-3, 11 KOs) in a scheduled 10-rounder.
The fight will air live on ESPN2, ESPN3.com and ESPN Deportes.
