Campillo-Kovalev bout rescheduled
By Dan Rafael
With his back injury healed, former titlist Gabriel Campillo has a new date against Sergey Kovalev.
Former light heavyweight titlist Gabriel Campillo and hot prospect Sergey Kovalev were supposed to meet Sept. 21, but Campillo pulled out with a back injury and Kovalev crushed replacement opponent Lionell Thompson in three rounds.
Now Campillo's back is better and the fight has been rescheduled.
Spain's Campillo (21-4-1, 8 KOs), a southpaw last seen losing a highly controversial decision to titleholder Tavoris Cloud in February, will face Russia's Kovalev (19-0-1, 17 KOs) on Jan. 19 at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., in the main event of the first “Fight Night” (NBC Sports Net, 9 p.m. ET) card of the year.
"This is a classic boxer-puncher fight between world-class fighters," said promoter and "Fight Night" matchmaker Russell Peltz. "On paper it doesn't get any better than this. In person it could be even better."
