Fonfara-Campillo now title eliminator

By Dan Rafael

The light heavyweight bout between Andrzej Fonfara and former light heavyweight titlist Gabriel Campillo looks like a solid scrap on paper and took on a bit more meaning on Tuesday when organizers announced that it has been sanctioned as a world title eliminator.

Fonfara and Campillo meet Aug. 16 (ESPN2) in a scheduled 12-round fight outdoors at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, now with the added bonus of the winner becoming the mandatory title challenger for the belt held by Bernard Hopkins.

Hopkins is scheduled to face his current mandatory challenger, Karo Murat, on Oct. 19 in Atlantic City, N.J. The winner will eventually have to face the Fonfara-Campillo winner, although that bout would be at least nine months away.

"We're very happy the IBF has declared the Fonfara-Campillo bout an official world title eliminator,” said Frank Mugnolo, president of Round 3 Productions, one of the promoters of the card. “There has been a sensational amount of interest in this unique boxing event at U.S. Cellular Field and the declaration from the IBF adds another layer of intrigue. Every fighter wants to compete for a world title.”

The Aug. 16 card will be the first outdoor pro boxing event in Chicago since the Sonny Liston-Floyd Patterson heavyweight title fight took place at the old Comiskey Park in 1962.
