Adamek-Glazkov fight in jeopardy
By Dan Rafael
Heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek’s fight with 2008 Ukrainian Olympic bronze medalist Vyacheslav “Czar” Glazkov is in jeopardy.
The two are scheduled to meet in a title elimination bout Saturday (NBC, 2:30 p.m. ET) at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. However, Adamek spent part of Wednesday afternoon at a doctor’s office because he is ill and might withdraw from the fight.
“He’s not feeling well, and we don’t know what he has,” Ellen Haley, spokeswoman for promoter Main Events, told ESPN.com. “He wants to wait until [Thursday] before making any decisions about fighting on Saturday. But he didn’t feel good. He was nauseous and sick to his stomach. Everybody thought it was dehydration.”
Whatever happens with Adamek (49-2, 29 KOs), there will still be a fight card, Haley said.
Main Events has at least two fighters on standby who have accepted the fight with Glazkov (15-0-1, 11 KOs) on short notice. The company has a conference call with NBC executives Wednesday night to discuss the alternatives and will wait to see how Adamek feels Thursday.
“We are looking for other alternatives to fight Glazkov, and if the worst happens and Adamek can’t fight, the show will go on,” Haley said.
