Cleverly comeback scheduled
By Dan Rafael
Nathan Cleverly, fresh off his knockout loss to Sergey Kovalev, is set for a move to cruiserweight.
Former light heavyweight titlist Nathan Cleverly, last seen in the ring in August when Sergey Kovalev mercilessly pounded him in a fourth-round knockout and took his belt, is making a comeback.
Cleverly announced that he would move up to cruiserweight last fall but his return fight was called off multiple times, including because of a back injury.
Now Cleverly is scheduled once again, this time on May 17 at Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales, his home country, Matchroom Sport Promoter Eddie Hearn announced on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Cleverly (26-1, 12 KOs) doesn't have an opponent yet but said he is anxious to get back to work and pursue another world title.
"I'm excited to get back into the ring on May 17," he said. "There are some big fights in the division. I've had a great rest and had a chance to lead a normal life and I am ready now to start a new chapter."
European featherweight champion Lee Selby (18-1, 7 KOs) of Wales is also on the card. He might be in a world title eliminator, according to Hearn.
"I think I am good enough to hold my own with any featherweight in the world, but I want to win the title and defend it, so that's the goal that we are building towards," Selby said.
The card will also feature an all-Welsh rematch of the action-packed February lightweight fight between Gary Buckland (28-3, 9 KOs) and former junior welterweight titlist Gavin Rees (37-4-1, 18 KOs). Buckland won a split decision the first time around.
Blue chip super middleweight prospect Callum Smith (9-0, 7 KOs) of England is also on the card as is middleweight contender Andy Lee (31-2, 22 KOs) of Ireland.
