Magdaleno fight off after opponent fails medical exam


Junior featherweight prospect Jessie Magdaleno had his fight against John Mark Apolanario canceled on Friday when Apolanario failed his prefight medical exam, according to promoter Top Rank.

The eight-round bout was scheduled to headline Saturday’s “Solo Boxeo” card on UniMas (11 p.m. ET/PT) at Laredo Energy Arena in Laredo, Texas.

A Top Rank-spokesman said Texas regulators declined to license Apolanario (18-5-3, 5 KOs) for medical reasons, but not disclose what his issue was. Top Rank it would reschedule Magdaleno (20-0, 15 KOs) as soon as possible.

Mexican featherweight prospect Oscar Valdez (14-0, 13 KOs) will face Jose Ramirez (25-5, 15 KOs) in an eight-round bout that had been the co-feature but was elevated to main event status in the wake of the failed medical test.

Middleweight prospect Esquiva Falcao (7-0, 5 KOs) versus Omar Rojas (3-2, 1 KO), a six-rounder, will now open the telecast, Top Rank said.
