Notes: Pendarvis out of Boxcino

A few notes from around the boxing world:

• Cleotis Pendarvis (17-4-2, 6 KOs) was due to face Ricardo Pinell (10-1-1, 6 KOs) in one of the six-round Boxcino junior middleweight tournament quarterfinals on this week's "Friday Night Fights" (ESPN2, 9 ET) at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, but he was 157¼ pounds, 2¼ over the 155-pound limit and was dumped from the tournament. He was immediately replaced by alternate John Thompson (14-1, 5 KOs). In the other tournament openers Stanyslav Skorokhod (8-0, 6 KOs) takes on Michael Moore (13-0, 6 KOs), Brandon Adams (15-1, 10 KOs) faces Alex Perez (18-1, 10 KOs) and Vito Gasparyan (14-3-5, 8 KOs) fights Simeon Hardy (13-0, 10 KOs). The Boxcino heavyweight quarterfinals follow next week from the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York.

• Bantamweight titlist Shinsuke Yamanaka (22-0-2, 16 KOs), a 32-year-old southpaw from Japan and the No. 1 118-pounder in the world, will make his eighth defense against Diego Santillan (23-0, 15 KOs), 27, of Argentina, on April 16 in Osaka, Japan, Teiken Promotions announced on Thursday. Yamanaka has defeated several quality opponents during his reign that began in 2011, including Christian Esquivel, Vic Darchinyan, Tomas Rojas, Malcolm Tunacao and Suriyan Sor Rungvisai, who was his most recent victim on Oct. 22.

• Featherweights Marvin Sonsona (19-1-1, 15 KOs), of the Philippines and Puerto Rico's Jayson Velez (22-0-1, 16 KOs) are due to meet in a title elimination bout for the right to become the mandatory challenger to titleholder Jhonny Gonzalez, Sonsona promoter Sampson Lewkowicz announced. The specific date and location of the fight have not been determined. Sonsona, who arrived in Las Vegas this week, will train at Roy Jones Jr.'s gym will train alongside former junior flyweight titlist Johnriel Casimero (21-2, 13 KOs), also of the Philippines.

"I'm very happy that Sonsona and Casimero are working together in Las Vegas, my hometown, and I'm looking forward to having two more champions for my promotional company in the very near future," Lewkowicz said.

Casimero is looking at a shot against the winner of the March 7 bout between flyweight titlist Amnat Ruenroeng, of Thailand, and China's Zou Shiming.
