Happy Birthday, WNBA!

On this day in 1996, the WNBA was founded. Eight teams took the court for the league’s inaugural season in 1997, and on June 21, 1997, Penny Toler scored the WNBA’s first points for the Los Angeles Sparks in a game against the New York Liberty at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Today, the league features 12 teams, and Toler is the executive vice president/general manager of the Sparks. The 2013 season is set to tip off one month from today, on May 24, when the defending champion Indiana Fever visit the San Antonio Silver Stars.
