|Sue Bird gives teammate Tanisha Wright, center, a high-five and an award for "best shower singer."|
With all of the hype around the 2012 WNBA postseason awards, I began thinking of what awards might be missing from the list. My teammates are very talented on the court, but off-court they can be just as impressive.
Tanisha Wright has been in the WNBA for seven years. She is a Penn State alumna and a great guard for the Storm. On the court, she is a phenomenal teammate and a true leader, but that’s not all she can do. I would like to nominate her as the league’s “best shower singer” for her renditions of Adele last season in locker rooms and hotel bathrooms across the country.
But what is a good rock session without a good dancer? This brings me to two other talented teammates of mine. Alysha Clark is a rookie out of Middle Tennessee State and a two-time Sun Belt Conference player of the year, but don’t let that young face fool you. Alysha learned more than jump shots and academics in college, including how to bust a move. She has some competition, though, because North Carolina’s finest -- Camille Little -- knows a little something about the dance floor as well, and she’s been in the league for five years. I would like to nominate Alysha and Camille as the league’s “Co-Best Celebratory Dancers,” for all those times they pumped us up before games -- and after.
Even with my amazing teammates there to psych all of us up for games, there are a few things you can do on your own to prepare. For me, most of them include Jay-Z. As every athlete knows, a killer playlist is key to pregame rituals. Other classics in my rotation include “Wobble” by V.I.C., some Citizen Cope, Notorious B.I.G., maybe a little Dixie Chicks and what playlist could be complete without Justin Bieber? A combination of my Russian heritage and my playing overseas also adds some international music to my iPod, though I’m sure I get the lyrics and artists’ names as mixed-up as a first-timer on stage to perform karaoke.
With my nominations and playlist secrets now exposed, I would like to leave you with one final thought. It is only appropriate for it to come from Jay, right?
