It’s important to give back to the community

Penn State
The Penn State men's and women's teams collected more than 1,000 toys to send out to kids for the holidays.

As a student-athlete at Penn State, we have the opportunity to get involved in some great outreach and community service programs. Getting with the holiday spirit, our team spent some time this past weekend helping with the Toys for Tots program. We joined countless volunteers and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops in a big effort to wrap and label presents that are going to be sent out to children all around Centre County.

Coach Coquese and our men’s head coach, Patrick Chambers, are the honorary co-chairs for this year’s toy drive. Each team collected some toys at a game this year, and we got more than 1,000 to give to kids for the holidays!

We also got to find out who on the team was the most skilled at wrapping presents. In my opinion, some of the biggest standouts were Talia East, Marisa Wolfe, Tori Waldner, and the MVP went to our point guard, Dara Taylor, who wrapped one of the biggest presents I have ever seen.

One of my favorite community service projects was when we had the chance to participate in the State College SPCA this summer. Being a huge fan of animals, especially dogs, I was very excited about this service day. We spent most of the day helping clean the facilities and getting to visit with the dogs, cats and even horses. At the end of the day, it was hard to tear us all away from the animals, and we were tempted to adopt a few pets of our own -- too bad our apartments won’t allow it.

It is so important as a team to get out and give back to the community that supports us every day.

This week is finals week, so wish us luck! This weekend we take on NJIT, and then we get to enjoy a much-needed holiday break. Until then, you can follow me on Twitter @maggielucas33 or the Lady Lions @pennstatewbb.
