Flashback: Cathy Freeman golden

By espnW

Cathy Freeman
Cathy Freeman's 49.11-second run in the 400 meters was one of the lasting memories from the Sydney Olympics.

On this day in 2000, the Sydney Olympics came to a close. The performance of Cathy Freeman, however, would live on. After lighting the Olympic flame at the opening ceremonies, Freeman went on to win gold in the women’s 400 meters, becoming the first Aboriginal Australian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Freeman, who had become one of Australia’s most iconic stars, also won the silver medal at the 2004 Games in Atlanta. She retired from athletics in 2003 and worked as an ambassador for children's fitness and aboriginal health and education causes. She had her first child, a daughter, in 2011.
